After months of enjoying a relatively mild Texas winter, spring is well and truly here. And that means humid, 100-degree days aren’t too far off. Take advantage of the mild spring temperatures to complete this cleaning and home maintenance checklist.
Windows & Doors
Keep hot, humid air outside by replacing cracked caulk and damaged weatherstripping. If any of your screens have holes or tears, replace them. While you’re at it, clean your windows inside and out. Then, consider that installing shutters or blinds can help keep the unrelenting Texas sun at bay.
Lawn & Garden
Now that the growing season is here, your grass, shrubs, trees and flowers are all waking up. Trim branches growing close to your house, reseed bare spots and prepare your flower beds for planting.
This is also the time of year to get your lawn care equipment back in working order, so sharpen tools, charge batteries, refuel and apply lubricant as needed. Test the irrigation system as well to ensure every sprinkler head is working.
Deck & Patio
You probably have plans to use your deck or patio to the fullest this spring and summer. Make sure it’s ready to entertain guests by repairing any damage, touching up paint and pressure washing all hard outdoor surfaces. Spray your wood deck to see if the water beads. If not, this is the year to reseal the wood.
Roof & Gutters
The roof and gutter system should drain rainwater away from the foundation. To ensure this happens, clean any debris from the gutters and extend the downspouts by at least six feet. Install gutter guards this spring, and you’ll never need to clean your gutters again! If your gutters are leaky or damaged, consider replacing them.
Siding & Foundation
Check your siding closely for signs of rot or other damage. Fill small holes with caulk or schedule professional repair if needed. Then, check the foundation for cracks more than one-half inch wide and call a specialist if you find any. Touch up your siding and window trim paint or schedule a fresh coat if you find widespread cracking, peeling, bubbling or other problems.
HVAC System
Replace your HVAC filter and vacuum the air registers around your house as part of your Texas summer preparation checklist. Then, turn on the air conditioner before you need it to ensure it’s working correctly. It’s wise to schedule AC maintenance every spring to ensure efficient, reliable performance all summer.
Other Appliances
Spring is the best time to inspect your major appliances. Clean the condenser coils on the back of the fridge, inspect the washing machine hoses, blow out the lint from the dryer vent and test the sump pump.

You may assume your attic already has insulation, but when was the last time you checked? Peek inside the attic hatch and look for water damage, pest infestations or rafters sticking through the existing insulation. If anything looks amiss, turn to Installed Building Products San Antonio.
